Ian McShane is one of my favorite actors, and Deadwood is one of my favorite shows, and Al Swearengen is one of my favorite characters on that show. As monstrous of a character as he was, he was strangely principled and an engine for progress. I just did this to warm up at inking but I might work this up more.

William Sutton, Willie the actor, or Slick Willie was an American bank robber, and one of the first men to be put on the FBI most wanted fugitive list. He was famously misquoted as saying he robbed banks because "thats where the money is." While he maintains to never have said this actually said some pretty cool things, such as he robbed banks at gunpoint, "You can't rob a bank on charm and personality," although if anyone ever could do it, it would have been Bill Sutton.

Here's what we were going for, a hardboiled, slightly weather beaten, private detective, drawing heavily on the tradition of Hammett and I was definitely not going to draw Bogie. I wanted him to be a little older, and showing it, while not being Gran Torino era Eastwood in regards to wrinkles, with at the very least a receding hairline. When I tried him bald unfortunately this guy looks way too much like Dashiell BadHorse, the main character from the series Scalped, which is funny as I was drawing heavily on reference images of my favorite boxer who is very Russian. I think this is going to work out.

I was trying to figure out how to draw a lion and really the aspect ration is key. This thing I drew has a short fat head and looks all soft and dumb. Stretch it out vertically and it'd be way more bad ass and way less dopey.

It really makes screenprinters pretty mad when they refuse to screen print my dumb ideas so I tell them I'll just do it in photoshop and it'll look pretty much the same, well one screen printer. I'm totally biting off the squiggles from this girl. I think this needs a few more squiggles, and a new background picture, but I think this is pretty funny now so you know.

Drawing really elaborate time consuming disrespectful pictures is pretty much the same thing as the following phrases: "Is that your face or is there a possum stuck in your collar? I hope you suffer a debilitating brain aneurysm you freak!" Ya'erd?!

After looking at a lot of pictures of him, I think what I dig about his face might be that he's really pretty, I can totally see how he used to be a model, however that amazingly badass facial scar is amazingly badass to the point its easy to miss. Awesome. If you haven't seen Terry Richarson's picture of him as Terry Richardson I recommend it.

I keep looking at the one picture of Major Malik Nadal Hassan. I don't know what I'm really looking for in it but I keep looking at it. Something in the story reminds me about the first time I got seriously involved with a girl.

She was second generation. Her mom tried hard to raise as Japanese as she could, but still she was growing up in the Boston suburbs. I think this contradiction left her with an intense misshapen nationalism, among other quirks. I think sometimes its hard to be second generation here. If I recall correctly, I read that Mr. Hassan was second generation as well, and if the stories surrounding him are true, he too had a malformed sense of self that manifested itself in a horrible way.

This doesn't in any way excuse his actions for me. I don't even know if any of what I'm thinking about has anything to do with the man, but I keep thinking about this and I keep looking at the one picture I can find. I keep looking at it waiting for some insight, but the only thing I see is that goddamn smirk.

After the second plane hit the second tower Ali Eteraz was thinking "I hope these aren't muslims." When I heard about the shooting at fort Hood I thought the same thing. I really hoped it was some peckerwoods angry at the feds or something like that. There's a reason for this. It might be callous, but America seems to keep its head better when white domestic terrorists do something terrible. After Oklahoma City people didn't seem so scared, the constitution didn't get undermined, our prejudices didn't seem to grow. 9/11 was different.

So the anger I feel towards this suspected mass murderer, stems from two things. One being the mass shooting, and the second being that this mass shooting threatens to drag America further backwards, to make the country more divided and less free. I hope he doesn't die in a hospital bed, and actually makes it to trial.

Other than the Gorilla Gorilla skull, these are studies for more Chomsky Stuff. When planning this I was struggling to come up with symbols for Pakistan, India, China, Russia, and America. America and Russia were quick, the bear and eagle, as was China, the other bear. India was at first going to be an elephant, but was changed to the tiger both because it works better for a piece about militarism and because it fits with the trend I had going of using the national animals to represent these nations. I had no idea what to use for Pakistan although settling on national animals solved this issue. I am proud to say that while brainstorming on the couch I said to Tim, " Maybe a goat or something?" only to find out that the national animal of Pakistan is a Markhor, which is indeed a goat, or something. Actually Pakistan has many many symbolic animals. China has many as well. This is noteworthy because one Chinese national animal according to wikipedia is a dragon. China is the only country I know of with a make believe animal as a national animal, they don't give a hoot what you think they do what they want. Giant Dams, sick Opening Games, industrial might, oodles of executions, DRAGONS, China's got 'em and there isn't a thing we can say to change that. Ballers.

My friend Jake is an aspiring playwrite. He is also a graduate of Emerge, a court ordered support group for domestic batterers. The story I hear are that he was a man trapped by circumstance and foolishness, not the monster his situation would seem to make him. I believed it until he asked me to make a drawing of a tampon fighting a menstrual blood demon for a series of monologues he'd made called "Women are Raging Cunts."

I'm proud I made anything good out of this dreadful idea.

All my things are in disarray currently as I graduated college and move, so I have not scanned much for you. Too bad. I do however have a fun series of facts.

I made an area to house detail images of my more nutso complex pictures. I made thumbnail images for them. One of these pieces is about mail order brides, and while carving out these different chunks of webspace I had a hidden place for the thumbnails, named appropriately enough, bride thumbs.

After setting up google analytics I find that more than two thirds of the visits to this detail blog is from search engines. 95 percent of the searches were for "bride thumbs", the fifth percentile is filled with searches for "bride thumbs!"

If you search "bride thumbs" the first hit is bride fetish pornography. The second hit is me. I keep thinking about deleting this page since it only confuses people, but I'm really amused when I think about horny dudes from as far away as Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Turkey, Iraq, Bulgaria, and Egypt looking for sexy weddings but stumbling onto pictures I drew of ugly women. I'm not sure this is what is happening, but I'm pretty confident.

I'm moving this weekend I'll have something to show you then.

Early Pitch Sketches Designs for large scale final branches

I helped design a spring themed exhibit for Daniel Krall's fashion illustration class (properly called Lifestyle, body and behavior, improperly called Bath mats and Casino interiors). Here you can see the steps we went to. In addition to these branches I had a plan for a major cloud of sparrow cut outs, however the consensus leaned towards someone elses proposed major butterfly swarm. I probably could have moved the masses to accept sparrows but opted for compromise because I just saw the Fountainhead and realized I don't want to be no Howie Roark. For the final presentation I got some help from my friend Sophia, who was a great help in making these go from flat to dimensional. We used a lot of foam core, acrylic paint, and razor blades. You may notice some tape thats in there currently as the epoxy is still setting, but I'll be taking that down tomorrow.

So I collaborated with Kate Haberer on this project. If you've noticed my prettiest of ladies aren't usually drawn that pretty, so she drew figures, and I drew backgrounds. She took point on color direction too. Actually she was pretty much director on these, which is good, as sometimes my work gets away from me. I think given our wildly different styles these came out totally amazing.

This was our mailer design, based on one of Kate's early sketches.

This is a two page spread, the figures on the left are based on one of Kate's early sketches, and the mayhem on the right are based on one of mine.

Here is most of what I did on the spread, although there were some additions, notably the broken wall, floppy disks, Louis Vuitton monogram, and a hapless, tackled man.

Here we see two pieces done for Daniel's lifestyle illustration class. One for sloth and one for diligence. They were designed to be both interesting from near and far. An enjoyable nights labor.

I would like to point out that while ISO dimensions may be nice in theory, it is less enjoyable when it is eleven at night and there is not a ruler to be found that has metric units on it, and four tenths of an inch is not a real fraction.

So I think the top two here are pretty well squared away. The bottom two are new and will probably be noodled with for a thousand years. The source story is pretty much completely gone from the second deck from the top, but it looks good and has assumed its own narrative. Chris thought the central figure was the admiral that bombed pearl harbor. Maybe that's what I'll start telling people. Its less depressing than the actual inspiration, at least to me.

In January of 2005, Andres Raya, a decorated but AWOL marine did something terrible in his hometown of Ceres, California. Whether what Mr. Raya did was the result of PTSD and a young man whose experiences in Iraq were terrible enough that he chose to die at home, or a cocaine fueled rampage by a gangbanging thug, we almost certainly will never know. However we do know that something terrible and tragic happened leaving Mr. Raya dead, along with Police Sgt. Howard Stevenson.

Mouthpieces were quick to jump in from all sides, the right, the left, and stranger places, and the Ceres police launched an initiative to crack down on the Norteños street gang which incited complaints of racism from the community.

If I've learned anything from watching Chuck Jones cartoons in my youth, and Reading John K.'s mad rambles in my maturity, its that any part of a character not working is a missed opportunity. The ears and overall mass here I think are used well. Probably some of my inspiration for how an emotional dog acts comes from the tail end of the classic Looney Tune, Feed the Kitty.

So I think this new sort of digital shading looks a little wack here, It might just look hotter with just the line art, but thats probably largely because I went in really tentatively with the gray and it as with all things should be all in or all out. This is what I learn from watching Sons of Anarchy on Hulu. Actually the guy who decided to go all in was set up by the ATF and his wifes head exploded, so that really wasn't a moral.

Still, in regards to art, All in All out. TV biker gangs aren't illustration.

While in Egypt, the English Lord was bitten on the cheek by a mosquito. The bite grew infected after Carnarvon knicked it while shaving, and he died of blood poisoning. Stories say that on midnight of the night he died his dog let out a howl and died. Stranger still were stories of a matching wound on the cheek of none other than the recently exhumed boy king Tutankhamun.

Here's the last assignment I knocked out, on using nonrepresentational marks (in this case the names of my grandmother and her twin) to make a representational picture (in this case my grandmother and her twin). These two ladies are pretty much the only reason I really can't miss Thanksgiving.

All told I made four expeditions on Sir William's behalf, during a period of six years, along the East Coast of Hudson Bay, through the barren lands of the hitherto unexplored peninsula of Ungava, along the west coast of Ungava Bay and along the southern coast of Baffin Land. This work culminated in the discovery of the Belcher Island archipelago in Hudson Bay -a land mass which occupies 5,000 square miles- upon this land mass were discovered extensive deposits of iron ore but all of too low a grade, however, to be of economic importance. It was fall of 2007, and Rachel Salomon was teaching me to paint. I made a lot of paintings of monsters, with various awesome techniques, because that was what we did back in the day. Thanks for the pro tips Rach.

Additionally, I'd been drawing Draculas compulsively instead of taking notes for about a year at this point. I have since slowed down the Draculas, and moved onto drawing fat animals.

My thesis is an exercise in character development, and world building. As the title says its Apocalypse fun, so what better world to build than the one thats been scorched by the fires of the atom?

Sir Frederic Hoyle wrote how after the cataclysm, the esquimaux were the least affected, in the hot times they simply rowed a little farther, in the cold times they dug a little deeper, but the survived admirably compared to the civilized folks, who were all but destroyed by The Black Cloud

Andre Royo, as Bubbles from The Wire, is one of my favorite subjects to draw. I've been trying to get better at showing how light falls over forms with all these ink drawings, and I think its working out pretty well.

Also, I while drawing Bubbles, I often think of Bioshock, and think of that other Mr. Bubbles.

So I watched Fringe last, night, and Lance Reddick was playing a pretty awesome CO again. It was pretty cool, even if Joshua Jackson isn't exactly my sort of action hero.

also here is a picture I think is better of Michael K. Williams, who played Omar Little, the legendary stick up boy from The Wire. I really should probably stop rendering things, because I don't like to, and think there's so much more zazz in these high contrast drawings. Maybe I'll color it later.

Toads are pretty cool, frogs too. One time I saw frog on a menu, and I totally would have gotten it, but sadly, I was hungover and didn't think they would be good for my gizzards.

In Leviticus they say you should not eat bats. That is what I learned sophomore year in college. It is pretty good advice because all bats do is make St. Bernards into monsters which is tragic, as the St. Bernard is meant to save hikers with its tiny brandy barrel, and not terrorize the countryside. In short, don't trust no bats.

Remember that bit about watching too much of The Wire? It didn't stop with school. Sometimes I liked to pretend I was being productive while watching it by drawing the characters from it. Featured here are Lance Reddick, or Lt. Cedric Daniels and a fourteen year old Jimmy Jelani Manners, or Kevin Johnston.

You may recognize Reddick from his recurring roles on Oz and every other procedural though probably not because I draw his head funny.

You may recognize Manners from Step Up 2: The Streets.

I drew some stuff in sketchbooks. Its pretty awesome.

The last days of junior year were characterized by staying up late doing homework and watching The Wire. I once walked to the same junk shop Bubbles frequents. Modern Junk and Salvage Co.

There is something that is endlessly alluring about a fish in a suit.

Doing things like this during AH-390 History of Film is probably why I got a B- instead of that A I think I deserved. That or walking out on those melodramas. Still, drawing a pretty rad Dracula is totally worth dragging down the GPA.

I went back and revisited some older characters I'd made up, and put together a little series for them. I like that whole mad max thing.

I like turtles driving muscle cars and firing guns. I also like puns, which is why I call him, "The Mach Turtle."

Sailor Jerry Mothers' day?

So I tried to make Mothers' day and pirates into one thing. You know, punk rock kids love throwing the skull and bones on everything, and they are starting to have kids. So maybe some day, the world will be ready for a nautical Mother's day.

Regardless of how holiday appropriate this is, I still like drawing tiny pirates.

I also don't know if its Mother's day or Mothers day. Does anyone?
